Sunflower Soule Farm is a Black woman, and veteran owned business. Melanie is a graduate of the Windy City Harvest Horticulture and Sustainable Urban Agriculture Apprenticeship program. She teaches farming and cooking to others incorporating a plant to table concept, and develops recipes from food grown at the farm and in the community grow space. In addition to completing the Urban Agriculture Apprenticeship, she holds a certificate in Horticulture Therapy from the Chicago Botanic Garden.
Melanie strongly believes in not only giving back to her community, but reaching out and showing them the benefits of growing their own food and incorporating them into their everyday lifestyles. Our goal at Sunflower Soule Farm is to be able to have an independent farm operation, with a focus of teaching gardens, workshop spaces, community garden space, and to be a model for future BIPOC farmers to follow.
We grow a few staple crops that are culturally relevant in most BIPOC communities, and will be expanding our variety of staple crops in the upcoming season.
These staple crops are and will be provided to the community on a sliding scale. We also grow and cultivate culinary, beneficial herbs, and edible flowers,(which are a value added product, and enable us to offer our produce at a sliding scale rate). We produce self-care products, tea medleys, and offer workshops on the benefits and use of these products.
